I was approached my Matt Spendlove of Matador Motion to help build the main character for his animated short 'low' (coming soon). Based on original character design sketches by Dan Bailey I was tasked with bringing B.O.B, a tired and worn out home pet-care robot to life.
Working from Dan Bailey's concept sketches, the challenge was to realise B.O.B as a functioning robot. As a starting point, we began looking at household appliances and domestic robots. Inspired by Naoto Fukasawa's product design for Muji this became the jumping off point for what B.O.B would look like as a home appliance. The main challenge was creating a believable home droid that retained the charm of the orignal sketches. Although simple in form and limited in movement, we wanted B.O.B to be able to express a range of emotions.
